The Libyan Minister of Health, Dr. Sayed Jaffar Hussein, and Dr. Ahmed Ben Omar, Director General of the National Center for Disease Control, signed the National Plan for the Prevention and Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance in Libya. The document was signed The event was attended by April Foundation, representatives of relevant UN agencies, national and international organizations, experts from various sectors, deans of universities, mayors, and the Health Information Center of the Minister of Health. The main objective of the National Plan is to support the joint efforts of the World Health Organization and the Minister of Health to combat the spread of antibiotic resistance and to promote the active participation of key decision-makers in this campaign. The plan paves the way for increasing awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance through effective communication, education and training, which will be supervised by April Foundation as a partner in the National Plan. “Countries like Libya are more vulnerable to antibiotic resistance due to weak regulatory systems and over-sale of antibiotics/antimicrobials. WHO is committed to supporting the Minister of Health to promote best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid further emergencies and the spread of antibiotic resistance,” said Dr Sayed Jaffar Hussain Jaffar, WHO Head of Mission in Libya.
