The Antibiotic Team of April Foundation celebrated with the Libyan Ministry of Health in cooperation with the National Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization office in Libya and under the patronage of Arab experts and the World Health Organization the conclusion of a series of activities on the occasion of the World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW2017) under the title “Consult a doctor before taking antibiotics”. The symposium was held in Tripoli in the presence of His Excellency the Minister of Health Dr. Omar Bashir, the Director General of the National Center for Disease Control Dr. Badr Al-Din Al-Najjar, delegates from the Ministry of Animal Resources and the University of Tripoli, faculty members from the University of Tripoli and Nasser University, directors of departments of the National Center for Disease Control, and students of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy. The symposium included the presentation of a number of researches and studies on the use of antibiotics in Libyan hospitals. The main presentation was given by the Antibiotic Team consisting of students from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Tripoli, explaining their work under the supervision of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in both faculties, the National Center for Disease Control, and the World Health Organization. Under the guidance of faculty members from both faculties, the students worked to help reduce the misuse of antibiotics and raise awareness among the public about the risks of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In addition, they conducted a large-scale study targeting: high school and university students, doctors and pharmacists. The results were presented and discussed during this seminar.Similar groups of the antibiotic team were appointed in other Libyan universities to implement the same activity in all cities until January 8, 2018.WHO Libya office commended these awareness activities and encouraged the students by presenting them with certificates of appreciation and confirmed its commitment to provide them with technical support.
